Below is a photo of the fire starting to take hold.

The fire ended up being quite fierce and for the first time in history, the race was stopped due to the poor visibility for the drivers.

Spencer was trapped in the car.  The force of the crash led to the doors compacting and not being able to be opened.  With fire raging around him Spencer luckily managed to crawl out of the drivers side window and escape unharmed but visibly shaken.  This managed to make the front page of the Age the next day.  I have an original copy of this paper that will go with the car to the eventual purchaser of the Monaro.

Luckily for Spencer and the Holden Dealers Team, Women for Wheels, the newly formed fire fighting group were at hand and they quickly extinguished the flames.
